Boarding Facilities - School House

Ashby School’s boarding facility, School House, is home to 49 boys from around the world.

In 2008, Ofsted inspectors ranked School House as ‘outstanding’, the highest possible rating.

Inspectors praised many aspects of House life, including the excellent level of support provided by boarding house staff. They also noted the positive and caring relationships between boarders of different cultures and backgrounds.

Boarders were successful in several categories at the school's prize-giving ceremony.

Since 1567, School House has prided itself on providing boarders with an excellent education in a picturesque setting.

Today’s boarders are educated at Ashby School or Ivanhoe College (for younger boys), ensuring they are taught in modern and well-equipped learning environments.

John Williams, Director of Boarding at School House, said: “School House is a comfortable, ancient establishment nestling between Ashby School, the parish church and the ruined castle of Ashby de la Zouch.

“For more than four centuries, we have offered boarders a comfortable and friendly, residential education in handsome surroundings. With all the facilities of a large and very well-equipped school on our doorstep, School House combines the best of tradition with the most up-to-date educational facilities and techniques.”

The House is small enough to cater for a wide variety of individual needs. Extra tuition is available for students with particular academic requirements (from remedial teaching to Oxbridge entrance). Students may choose from an extensive range of GCSE courses and A level courses.

The House has access to the full range of sporting, cultural and social resources offered by Ashby School. All boys have full IT and internet access every day.

Mr Williams added: “School House is committed to a high standard of care and accommodation. Our aim is to discover the potential in all our boys and to ensure that they leave School House well-qualified and prepared for the challenges of life beyond school.”

Admission to School House is by interview not examination. Boys must be either British Citizens or Citizens of the European Union.

Boys are eligible for admission from the age of 10. For a Prospectus, or for details of fees and the application process, parents can contact School House by telephoning 01530 413759 or by emailing schoolhouse@ashbyschool.org.uk .
