Curriculum and Faculties

Girls at work As a Specialist Technology and Languages College, Ashby School places special emphasis on these areas, as well as offering the full range of National Curriculum subjects.

In its role as a Technology College, Ashby promotes the teaching of Mathematics, Science, Design Technology, and Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Since being awarded Languages College status in 2006, the School has continued to encourage all students to study a foreign language. It is also broadening the range of languages on offer to include Russian and Japanese, as well as the core languages of French, German and Spanish.

Ashby School also gives students the opportunity to study Humanities, Arts, Sports, Vocational and Business-related subjects.

Curriculum Aims

The curriculum aims to be broad, balanced and relevant:

  • All students can choose from a range of courses and qualifications covering a wide range of subjects and skills.
  • Students are encouraged to develop their own mix of subjects combining a broad range with more specialist choices that meet their interests and future career ambitions.
  • All students will be provided with the opportunity to develop essential practical skills for life and work. Curriculum and assessment arrangements will emphasise and promote competence in analysis, problem solving and thinking as well as basic skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT.
  • Students with special needs or those facing difficult personal, family or social circumstances will be helped to overcome any problems these present.

All students in Years 10 and 11 have to study:

English, Mathematics, Design Technology, Science, Citizenship, Religious Studies, Personal Social and Health Education (which includes sex and drug education), Physical Education, Work Related Learning and Careers. The basic skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT are taught through all subjects.

The timetable is completed with students choosing further subjects. For a full list of the subjects we anticipate offering next academic year please see the supplementary information.

Parents may if they wish, withdraw their son or daughter from aspects of sex education, and religious studies, but this must be done in writing when options are chosen, and sent to the Director of Curriculum.

Help for students choosing Year 10 options

  • An Open Evening is held annually during the Autumn Term when Year 9 students and parents are invited to tour the school and talk to staff.
  • Options are discussed with parents at meetings during the Spring Term – (see Supplementary Information for dates and venues)
  • An additional explanatory booklet - ‘Year 10 Option Booklet’ - is provided during the spring term prior to entry to Ashby School to help students and parents with the choices they will need to make.
