LITERACY AND DYSLEXIA
About Mr. Salt
Malcolm Salt is an expert in the teaching of reading, spelling and writing. He was formerly a Head of English with experience in a number of very different schools.
Mr. Salt has spent many years teaching adults and younger pupils - within the age range 5 years to 80. He is currently at Ashby School where he continues his interest in (and research about) teaching literacy.
He conducts a unique experiment: the 'Tip Tops' are local primary school children who are 'gifted and able' and who come to Ashby School once a week for extra (and specialised) help. A unique set of resources are used to teach these pupils - the ‘Merlin’ resources. These are available through the school.
There is a 'numeracy' interest as a part of the 'Tip Tops' course. The focus is on 'fast' maths - learning the simple (but important) things, and computing with great speed. For instance, we teach fast fractions.
Mr. Salt is also interested in raising pupil achievement in secondary schools - across the board. Since his arrival at Ashby School, the number of students achieving five GCSE passes at grades A*-C has risen from 42 per cent to 70 per cent in 2006.
