School House Notes
March 2007
Applications to School House from prospective boarders have already exceeded the number of places available for the next academic year. The over-subscribed boarding house has been inundated with applications from around the world, including its first ever application from Hungary. Other applicants hail from Hungary, Latvia, Malta and Hong Kong.
School House is also building on its reputation as a centre for gifted and talented teaching. In June, John Williams, Head of Boarding, will travel to Spain, where gifted and talented teaching is a new concept. Mr Williams will share his knowledge and experience with teachers in Spain as part of a week-long course to help them kickstart their own gifted and talented programmes. The sessions will take place at the University of Santiago di Compostela in Galicia.

For the first time in its history, School House has become home to students from Malta. The three boys arrived at the beginning of the autumn term, adding to the already cosmopolitan flavour of School House.
Meanwhile, representatives from School House travelled to Berlin in November for the European Education Fair. They met educational agents from across the region to promote School House, with a view to attracting new European boarders in future years.
Over the past term, School House boys have celebrated the Chinese Moon Festival, Hallowe'en and Bonfire night, as well as taking their annual Christmas shopping trip to York.
School House has also hosted a variety of events for gifted and talented youngsters from across the country. These included a course run in connection with Cambridge University for talented Leicestershire state school pupils, along with others from independent schools in the Midlands.
A series of one day courses has also taken place at School House, as part of its role within the National Academy of Gifted and Talented, based at Warwick University.

In the Summer term, School House loses some of the boys who have helped to form the character of the House in recent years. Among these are Bobby Jelliman from Germany, Tim Chow from Hong Kong, and many other boys who will be taking the plane home after a lengthy stay at School House.
Our new boys, arriving in September, will represent an equally cosmopolitan and international sample. Boys will be arriving from Malta, Latvia, Germany, Spain and Hong Kong as well as from the UK. School House will continue to resound with a variety of different languages. Boys will still celebrate extraordinary and exotic festivals and try out food from the far corners of the world. The international mix of boys in School House gives a strength and diversity to the House and school and reflects the changing face of Great Britain in the 21st Century and the growing international focus of education here at Ashby School.
