12 Mar 2018
A young chef from Ashby School has won the regional final of the Rotary Young Chef competition, beating eight other hopefuls to bag a place in the national final.
Lorena Dawes, who celebrated her 15th birthday on the day of the regional final, was competing alongside fellow Ashby School student Millie-Jayne (MJ) Hynard, 15. Both are in Year 10.
Other finalists came from as far afield as York, Doncaster and Long Eaton.
For her winning menu, Lorena, who is from Ashby, prepared a caramelised onion and goat’s cheese tartlet, followed by pork fillet served with Lyonnaise potatoes and green beans. For dessert, she made a chocolate soufflé.
Sarah Middleton, head of food technology at Ashby School, said: “Both girls did amazingly well. I was so proud of them – their dishes were fantastic.
“Lorena did extremely well to achieve first place.”
Lorena and MJ have been coached by Ruth Andre-Evans, on behalf of the Rotary Clubs of Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
The Rotary Young Chef final will take place in Telford next month.
