04 May 2018
A young chef from Ashby School has taken second place in the national final of the Rotary Young Chef UK competition, from a field of 8,000 entrants.
Lorena Dawes, 15, of Ashby, was named ‘First Runner Up’ in the grand final at Telford and won the award for ‘Outstanding Dish of the Day’ for her dessert. She qualified for the final after winning her regional heat earlier this year.
For her impressive menu, Lorena prepared a caramelised onion and goat’s cheese tartlet, followed by pork fillet served with Lyonnaise potatoes and green beans. Her award-winning dessert was a chocolate soufflé.
Sarah Middleton, head of food technology at Ashby School, said: “Lorena took the First Runner Up trophy which, out of more than 8000 entrants, was a fantastic achievement.
“She also won Outstanding Dish of the Day for her chocolate souffle with Chantilly cream and raspberries four ways.”
Lorena was mentored throughout the competition by Ruth Andre-Evans, on behalf of the Rotary Clubs of Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
