Rugby Girls Win County Cup
17 Mar 2017
The under 15 girls' rugby team have been crowned county champions, after beating all six teams in the county rugby festival.
The Ashby team was made up of some County and Midlands players and some who were complete novices to the game.
All the girls did themselves proud by playing six games and winning all of them. They scored 39 tries in total and only conceded 10 in the whole competition.
Ashby faced Uppingham Community College in the final, afoter already defeating them in the group stages. Uppingham were the first to score with a great run; the Ashby girls tried hard to make the tackles but couldn’t quite get there.
Straight after, Olivia Chantry ran half the length of the pitch to get the team back quickly on to level terms at 5-5.
There were a few more exchanges of tries until the score was 15 points apiece. After half time, Ashby scored more tries with another two coming from Olivia Chantry and Freya Gardner; Georgina Parrot scored to clinch the whole competition.
As County Cup winners, the girls will now progress to represent Leicestershire in the regional finals on 29 March at Market Harborough Rugby Club.
There was plenty of effort from the girls throughout the whole competition and it was tiring work for the 13 girls who attended. They played in fantastic spirit supporting the other teams playing and more importantly had fun throughout the day.
Olivia Chantry captained the side to victory, Olivia Palmer put in a huge number of tackles and tries, Mia Veitch made plenty of powerful runs, Molly Crowley and Lucy Marston were fantastic in defence and inhelping others out around them. Molly Daykin scored two tries, in spite of never playing rugby before. All of the girls in the rest of the squad also scored tries throughout the competition.
Team: Olivia Chantry, Olivia Palmer, Molly Crowley, Rebecca Foster, Lucy Marston, Mia Veitch, Tasha Barnes, Freya Gardner, Holly Fawkner, Georgina Parrot, Caitlin Rowles, Mia Rawlings and Molly Daykin.
