Speaking Our Language - English Students Get a Taste of Life at DMU
11 Nov 2016
University taster sessions on English language and literature at De Montfort University were a chance for Year 13 students to sample higher education.
Fifteen English language students spent the day at DMU where activities included a seminar introducing corpus linguistics which examined how the meanings and associations of words have changed over time.
There was also a lecture about the representation of women in magazines from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Students visited the library archive to see a collection of women’s magazines from the 19th and 20th century, including very early editions of Vogue and Good Housekeeping.
Teacher Tom Mummery said: "The activities were designed to introduce the students to university education and also extend their own ideas about gender theories and research methods which they will be studying this year on the A level English language course."
