Careers Programme

Connexions Advisers are at Ashby School every day to give information, advice and guidance to students considering their career options.
Personal Advisers
A Connexions Personal Adviser (PA) can:
- talk to students about the options open to them and help them decide what to do next;
- answer queries;
- help with any problems that a student may have entering his/her chosen career.
Finding work, training or a course
Personal Advisers can give practical help with getting a job, an apprenticeship or a place at college. They can help students to:
- apply for vacancies;
- arrange interviews;
- fill in application forms and cope with interviews;
- deal with any other career-related issues.
The latest jobs and apprenticeships for young people can be accessed on the Connexions website at www.connexions-leics.org/jobs.
Students can telephone to find out more about these opportunities and how to apply. Jobs and apprenticeships are also displayed in school and in Connexions centres.
Money and benefits
Personal Advisers can offer advice about money. This could include benefits like Income Support or money available while in educatioin, like an EMA.
Information
Ashby School has a Connexions resource area with information on a range of subjects such as courses, jobs, health, money and free time. The local Connexions centre has an ‘Information Zone’ with similar information.
Extra help
Students who may need extra help – perhaps because of a learning difficulty or a disability, or because they cannot find a course or job to suit them – can seek guidance from a Personal Adviser.
PAs are happy to talk about:
- college courses to meet students' needs;
- special programmes for students going straight into work;
- other people who can give advice.
