Good behaviour is recognised and rewarded at Ashby School.
Hard-working, well-behaved students are issued with 'positive points'. These can then be exchanged for rewards such as free music downloads and food vouchers to be used in the school restaurants.
As part of the scheme, students who fail to produce schoolwork or fall short of behavioural expectations are given negative points.
These are deducted from the student's points 'balance'. This means that students sacrifice their rewards if their negative points outnumber their positive tally.
Students with a negative points balance face a range of sanctions which include:
- verbal warning;
- after school detention;
- being placed on report;
- parental interviews and agreed behaviour targets;
- exclusion.
Geoff Staniforth, Director of Rewards, Behaviour and Attendance, said: "There have always been awards for the most able, highest-performing students. But the vast majority of students who are consistent, hard-working and well-behaved do not always get the recognition they deserve.
"The points system ensures that anyone who deserves a reward gets one."
Points are recorded electronically and kept on the school's e-behaviour database.
Positive points may be awarded for a range of reasons from outstanding coursework or evidence of consistent hard work to involvement in extra-curricular activities, such as sport or music.
Parents are informed of serious breaches of the rules and of the appropriate disciplinary actions taken. For detentions, 24 hours' notice will be given, in writing. Detentions usually take place after school on Tuesday, between 3.05 – 4.25pm. Students who normally catch the bus to and from school are able to take the school late bus at 4.30pm, if they are placed in after-school detention.
Students' most remarkable efforts and achievements are celebrated at the Annual Awards Evening which is a major event in the school calendar.
