The qualification focuses on an applied study of the engineering sector and learners will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of working in the sector. The qualification has been designed to sit alongside the requirements of core GCSE subjects. It is appropriate for learners who are motivated and challenged by learning through hands-on experiences and by content which is concrete and related directly to those experiences.
The level 2 qualification is appropriate for learners who are looking to develop a significant core of knowledge and understanding in engineering and apply that knowledge through a project.
Year 10 and 11
Practical lessons: The students will develop a range of practical skills alongside core computer aided design (CAD) skills. Projects will include making a G-cramp, a Lego man and an electronic light box. Students will have the opportunity and be encouraged to use the school’s laser cutter and 3D printer.
Theory lessons: Using IT, students will acquire knowledge on engineering topics in order to apply them into the practical classroom. This is to equip the students with the required knowledge for their written units. Topics will be focussed around materials, processes and manufacturing as well as product analysis study.
Homework will be set on a weekly basis and is used to support theory lessons.
One lesson per fortnight will be allocated to the teaching and learning required for unit 2, externally assessed technical drawing. A variety of skills, techniques and equipment will be used and explored in order to get the students ready for the examination.
Spring term 2018
Students are starting the new NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Studies and will undertake several skills building projects before completing 4 units of work
Year 10 develop their knowledge of Engineering and practical skills through a number of projects including:
G Clamp Project
CAD Lego Man Project
Smoothing Plane Project
There are units of work (these will continue into Year 11 from 2018).
Unit 1 – Introduction to Engineering – Internally assessed project
Unit 2 – Introduction to Engineering Drawing – Externally set drawing exam
Unit 3 – Tools and Equipment for Engineering - Internally assessed project
Unit 4 – Engineering Materials and their Properties - Internally assessed project
Year 11 (for 2017 - 18 cohort only)
GCSE coursework final deadline: Friday 23 March 2018
After school clubs
Engineering after school sessions are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday every week from 3.15pm - 4.15pm in room C18/C19. These sessions can be used by students to catch up with coursework or to create their own projects.
