Calculator Information - Summer 2017
03 Jul 2017
Dear Parent/ Carer,
At Ashby School, we believe that students should bring a calculator with them to every maths lesson from the start of Year 10. We really think that students who do this stand a better chance of success in their GCSE exams.
Over the last few years, there have been a number of changes to the maths curriculum and this has had an impact on the calculators that we would like students to buy. Some of our students will already know that they want to go on and study A-level maths, and the requirements of calculators for the new A-level far exceed the expectations of the calculators which are satisfactory for GCSE maths. However, some of these calculators are expensive and therefore we want to advise you as best possible in buying a calculator which will be useful for as long as possible.
There are three calculators that the faculty would recommend.
Casio fx-85GT PLUS Two Way Power @ £8.00 (rrp £13.99)
This calculator has been used within our faculty for years with GCSE students. Nowadays all foundation students are required to be able to use a scientific calculator and this has all of the functions required to be able to complete the foundation exam to a high standard. This calculator does not have all of the functions that are required for further mathematical study. There are three colours to choose from: Black, Blue and Pink.] [Image result for fx-85gt plus two way power]
Casio CLASSWIZ fx-991EX @ £19.95 (rrp £31.00 Amazon)
This is one of the best non-graphical calculators available and it is also the minimal requirement for the new A Level syllabus. It has many functions which are very useful for the GCSE syllabus, including quadratic and simultaneous equation solvers. This would be a very good calculator for all GCSE syllabuses, but would come highly recommended for those studying towards Higher Tier GCSE.
Casio fx-9860GII @ £54.00 (rrp £73.74 incl VAT)
This is a powerful graphical calculator.
This has all the functionality that is required for A-level exams and therefore if you know that this is a path that you would like to follow in the future then get ahead by buying this calculator now and getting your money’s worth from it! Before committing to purchasing this calculator it’s advisable to consult with your maths teacher.
This calculator has all the functions that the Classwiz calculator has, plus graphing functions which make it extremely useful for any maths exam.
The faculty will help with training for this calculator through extra sessions.
If you wish to purchase any of these calculators, then please complete the slip below and return to the Maths Office by Tuesday 11 July 2017 so that we can place an order for students to collect at the start of September. Our preferred method of payment is via the school’s secure online payment facility, WisePay, which can be accessed from our website www.ashbyschool.org.uk. If you prefer to pay by cheque, then please make it payable to “Ashby School” or alternatively you may pay by cash. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
