School Transport Changes
24 Mar 2016
The County Council has determined that with effect from September 2017 the currently 'frozen' transport status given to Ashby School will be removed. This is a direct result of the age range change at Castle Donington Community College.
The effect of this is that students currently living in the Ashby School catchment area will, in future, only get free transport to their nearest secondary school and this will only be provided if they live more than three miles away.
For a number of students and families, Ashby is not their nearest school and the Studio School at Stephenson College is their nearest provider and therefore, free transport will be provided to this establishment.
All of our local schools, including primary schools, have details of the arrangements and can inform you if you will be affected by this change.
Ashby School has a long and well-established relationship with both Ivanhoe College and Ibstock College and parents and students expect to move to Ashby at age 14 to continue with their education. All schools are extremely disappointed with this decision and have expressed their concerns to the local authority.
This decision will not affect your child being able to apply to Ashby as normal and being offered a place as currently happens. Ashby School intends to provide transport to a number of affected areas and parents will be required to pay the transport costs if they wish to attend Ashby School.
We are aware that a number of parents have already made representation to their Member of Parliament and county councillor and where parents may have concerns about these arrangements we would suggest that they use the relevant bodies to raise their concerns as this is not a decision that any of the schools has any control over.
We will continue to build on our existing strong partnership approach to 11-19 education and ensure that all students continue to have full access to the three good schools. We expect the vast majority of students to continue with their existing pathway and we will work together to ensure that the transport arrangements we put in place enable students to continue attending a good school.
