Careers Choice Evening - Wednesday 8 November 2017
11 Oct 2017
This year's Careers Choice Evening is aimed not only at Year 11 students but at those from all year groups who are looking for more advice and information on what to do next.
Here's everything parents need to know about the evening:
Dear Parent/ Carer,
CAREERS PROGRAMME 2017-2018
The current academic year will be a very important one for your son/daughter as they take their GCSE examinations and make a decision on their post-16 options.
It is our aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to make the right personal decision regarding their career progression. To help them do this, we would like to invite all Year 11 students and their parents/carers to a Careers Choice Evening on Wednesday 8 November where information and advice on options at post-16 will be available, along with a whole host of representatives from education providers and professions.
Your son/daughter will soon need to complete their applications for their post-16 choices. This year, students will apply directly to the institution which they would like to attend by Friday 2 February 2018 and record their choices on the Ashby School Application Process. Students will be introduced to the process in their PSD lessons during November and will use it to apply to Ashby School or to record their applications to other institutions. Students will be given time in lessons to complete their applications, and we recommend that you talk with them about their next steps during this time. There will also be lunchtime drop in sessions should your son/daughter need any extra support. Students can also work on this at home, or computer access is available in the library before school, during break time, at lunch time and after school.
Your son/daughter may find using the careers software Fast Tomato, the UCAS Progress website and the National Careers Service good places to start if they are unsure about future options. These are listed at the bottom of this letter. For information about local open days; work experience opportunities during school holidays; apprenticeship vacancies; careers events and residential courses, your son/daughter can look at the Your Future: Opportunities Tab on the student home page.
As you may be aware, all Year 11 students need to remain in education or training until they are 18 years old. This can be at Ashby School Sixth Form, but can also be at a college, training provider or an apprenticeship scheme.
We welcome parental links and urge you to contact the school if you have any queries regarding the careers programme or any concerns about your son/daughter’s future plans.
In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at the Careers Evening on Wednesday 8 November. The evening commences at 6:30 – 8:30pm and will take place on the Nottingham Road Site (C Block) and Café Express in A Block. Parking for parents/carers will be in A Block (Nottingham Road). The event is always very busy, therefore there is overflow parking available at Ivanhoe College.
Yours sincerely,
Miss Aimee Littler Mrs Lisa Concannon
