Year 12 parents - Introduction to Year 13, including Dress Code and Use of Mobile Phones
21 Jun 2019
Your child has nearly completed their first year of Sixth Form at Ashby School and I hope they have enjoyed their time here and taken advantage of the many different opportunities available to them. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you about some important changes we are making in school; these changes are intended to improve the school experience for everyone and we would welcome your support in ensuring students follow the guidelines below.
We have allowed mobile phones to be used in school to support learning as, in some occasions, they can serve as an effective aid. However, it is clear that phones have become a real distraction for young people and are causing issues that is affecting learning.
From Monday 24 June, mobile phones will not be allowed in registration or lessons. All phones must be turned off and kept in students’ bags. If phones are visible in pockets, students will be warned to put them away but, if phones are removed to use or look at, they will be confiscated. Confiscated phones will be locked in a safe until the end of the day when they can be collected by the students - they will not be returned to the student before the end of the day. We do recognise that students at Ashby are older which is why we will continue to allow them to use phones at break and lunch, but no longer in classrooms. Students will be permitted to use their phones during their study periods in both the library and the Sixth Form Centre, but only if it is to support learning. Students using their phones for other reasons during study periods will be asked to put them away.
To support students with recording information and homework, we would like all students to purchase a diary/planner. They will need this to record any homework or coursework they receive. Tutors will be checking that all students have a diary/planner on the first day of the new year. If you are concerned at all regarding the amount of homework your child is getting, please contact their tutor.
We have operated vertical, mixed year tutor groups for the past 18 years but feel the time is right to return to horizontal tutor groups. From 1 July, this means your child will be in a form with students from the same year group. This move will allow us to focus information and materials specifically to the year group rather than trying to deliver four different messages. I would like to remind you that registration starts at 8.45am and students need to be in classrooms at this time.
As you are aware, we have had a full uniform consultation in the spring term and are moving to a more formal uniform. Following this consultation, it was decided that the Sixth Form uniform will remain the same. However, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few points.
Sixth Form students should dress as if they are working in a business/office environment. This means that skirts and dresses must be of a sensible length. Shoes should be plain black. Trousers and skirts should be plain black. Dresses should be plain grey or burgundy. Tops should be plain grey or burgundy.
Please refer to our website for detailed information or if you want any clarification contact Mrs Rundle-Brown, Director of Sixth Form, by email at V.Rundlebrown@ashbyschool.org.uk
I hope you have a wonderful summer holiday and your child returns in August fully refreshed and enthusiastic for the challenges of Year 13.
