Year 13 Students: Planning for Post-16
13 Sep 2019
Dear Parent/Carer ,
As this important year progresses, we strive to provide all students with as many opportunities as possible to find the right path for them post Sixth Form. I would like to share the following information with you regarding some upcoming dates and opportunities.
For a number of students, this path will be applying for universities and after the successful Post Sixth Form Preparation Day in Year 12 this process should be well underway.
Although UCAS (university application) official deadlines may be different, I would like to draw your attention to the school’s deadlines for UCAS applications this academic year:
• Early applicants (medicine, dentistry, and veterinary science, Oxford or Cambridge) should submit their application by no later than Friday 27 September 2019.
• Early bird applicants (for those who would like to be amongst the first batch of applications that the school will prioritise to submit) should submit their application by no later than the end of Friday 11 October to ensure these will be processed upon our return after half term.
• ALL remaining UCAS applications should submit their application by no later than the end of Friday 8 November. (If the student has not made all five university course choices by this date, they can add at a later stage).
Students have all been provided with resources to complete their application and write a personal statement but they are more than welcome to ask for further support and advice regarding this from a member of the Sixth Form Team. In addition, to further support our students there will be a refresher talk on ‘how to write a personal statement’ on Monday 30 September, 3.15-4.00 in the Lecture Theatre.
Students have also been made aware that a free booklet to assist with starting to write the personal statement is available from the Sixth Form office. There will also be an assembly regarding student finance and an information evening for parents next term. Details will follow in due course.
For those who are seeking employment or an apprenticeship after Sixth Form, students are advised that we have an external visitor coming to school on Friday 6 December from the LEBC (Leicestershire Education Business Group). The aim of this session (9.00 am-10.00am) is to deliver a workshop on CV writing and apprenticeship opportunities. If students are interested in attending this session, please advise a member of the Sixth Form team.
There will also be an assembly later this term delivered by an ex student who has pursued the apprenticeship route after Sixth Form.
Our Careers Evening is on Wednesday 30 October. All students/parents/carers are welcome to attend.
If you have any queries regarding any of these opportunities, please contact the Sixth Form team.
Yours faithfully,
Miss F McCafferty
Assistant Director of Post 16 Studies
