Blast Off for Primary Science Fair!
22 Jun 2022
Fun and learning took centre stage when Ashby School hosted its annual primary science fair.
The visitors took part in a series of science-based workshops which included making and launching their own rockets in physics, dissecting a sheep's heart in biology and using bunsen burners in chemistry to discover how different chemicals changed the colour of the flame. The activities were run with support from Year 12 science students.
The primary school pupils also brought displays of their own scientific discoveries which were judged by a panel of school experts, based on their visual impact, scientific content and pupils' ability to communicate their findings.
The winner was Toby Regan from Donisthorpe Primary School who impressed the judges with his bottle rocket and his use of trigonometry to explain how high the rocket flew with different volumes of water.
Ben Clarke, Second in Science, said: "The standard of pupils' work was extremely high. We were very impressed by their knowledge, enthusiasm and ability to talk about what they had learned.
"We really hope the fair helped to excite the pupils about becoming future scientists and possibly pursuing science as a career."
Guest speaker was former Ashby School student Sam Oakley who asked pupils and parents to think about why dinosaurs had such big tails!
