09 Oct 2019
The Year 11 rugby team has reached the quarter finals of the County Cup.
PE teacher Ricky Wickwar reports: 'Year 11s visited Uppingham Community College in the first round of the County Cup and came away with a well-deserved 17-11 victory in a tight battle hindered by the windy conditions.
Ashby started with some early pressure in the opposition half and demonstrated some great handling skills from Joe North, Harrison Pallett but unfortunaley didn’t score tdue to some last ditch defending from UCC.
Ashby then got on the score board shortly after with a try from Harry Ikin Dean who was relentless throughout the whole game with his ball carrying. Captain Chester Owen scored the conversion 7-0.
Ashby's next score came again from Harry Ikin Dean, this time set up by some good support lines by Andrew Haluch, Ollie Vann and Ed Bennion. 12-6 was the score after UCC scored two penalty kicks.
Just before half time, UCC got a try of their own making the score 12-11.
Second half, Ashby had the wind and made good use of it with some good kicks being made to the touch line for Jack Roberts and Liam Broughton to chase down.
Ashby’s scrum was holding firm and always had the upper hand and turned some balls over as well to put Ashby in some good attacking positions; this was led by Aaron Leeson, Jack Lickorish and Joe Davies.
Ashby got one last try by Harrison Pallet before the full time whistle, again through some slick handling skills from the backline.
Ashby will face Hinckley Academy for a hard-earned place in the semi finals.'
