The English Department aims to foster a love and appreciation of literature across a range of cultures and eras.
Students develop valuable skills including the ability to analyse and evaluate, recognise fact and opinion, perfect differing writing styles, and hone their speaking skills.
English is taught in the school's dedicated English building where classrooms are designed specifically for the teaching of English and provide students with a bright, modern, and well-equipped learning environment.
Ashby School also works closely with other local schools to ease the transition from high school to upper school. The scheme makes Year 9 students more familiar with the kind of work they are expected to do at upper school, and gives Ashby School teachers a better idea of what students are capable of, before they arrive in Year 10.
Theatre trips continue to play a vital and popular part in English.
