Ashby School Remembers...
11 Nov 2022
Remembrance Day was marked by a series of special events for students and staff across the school community, including two minutes' silence at 11am to remember the fallen.
This followed a dedicated tutor session to reflect on the importance of remembrance and to commemorate the 122 members of the Ashby School community who died during the two World Wars. This included a special reference to former student Lieutenant Colonel Philip Bent who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during WWI.
As in previous years, a field of 122 paper poppies was planted in the school grounds to remember each of the 122 who lost their lives.
Members of the student senior team joined Headteacher Dr Jude Mellor, as well as students who belong to the uniformed services, at the town’s war memorial to lay a wreath and pay their respects to local people who have died in conflicts since World War One.
In the school library, students have been adding their own messages to a display board to explain what Remembrance means to them.
Year 7 student Joey Anwyll earned a Golden Ticket by reading war poem 'In Flanders Fields' aloud to his classmates. All Year 7 students attended an assembly on the importance of Remembrance.
Headteacher Jude Mellor said: “On Remembrance Day, it’s important that we all stop and think about the sacrifices that have been made by those before us to protect the freedom and safety that we enjoy today.”
