The role of computer science as a discipline and as an ‘underpinning’ subject across science and engineering is growing rapidly. Businesses today require an ever-increasing number of technologically-aware individuals, particularly the gaming, mobile and web related industries, and this specification has been designed with this in mind.
As part of this course, students will discover how a computer system works. They will look at: the different hardware components, how computer systems connect to each other and the internet; how the internet works; how computer systems make a difference in the current society and will develop their own pieces of software using Visual Basic.NET.

Year 10

Practical lessons – learning in depth hardware components with practical elements of building desktop computers. Students will also learn programming code using Visual Basic.NET and apply this to a real life problem to create their own solution.
Theory lessons – Students will look into how computers affect society and how they work.

Year 11

The focus of Year 11 is to complete the coursework set out by the exam board and make sure every student is prepared for their exams.
Students will need to cover a whole range of topics from HTML and web design, programming, networking, hardware and computer systems.
Students must create a piece of software for a given scenario for the coursework element.
