Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is additional funding that is provided to schools to address the inequalities between children currently eligible for free school meals (or who have been in the last 6 years) and their peers

Aim

To use the Pupil Premium funding to raise educational attainment and progress of Pupil Premium pupils to help them to reach their potential.

Approach

Our Pupil Premium strategy outlines our approach to spending the Pupil Premium funding effectively.

Strategies

If your child is eligible for Pupil Premium funding, details below outline how we aim to support them throughout their time at Ashby School.

  1. To ensure your child is receiving quality first teaching. Subject interventions may also be provided if deemed appropriate.
  2. To ensure students can access pastoral support where needed which may include small group work, mentoring and workshops.
  3. To provide support for purchasing uniform, stationery or other items that your child requires for Ashby School.  Please contact us to discuss how we can assist in this area.

Pupil Premium Funding can be used to support curriculum related trips. The amount of support for trips will be decided on a case by case basis.

Monitoring and Evaluation

The Pupil Premium strategy is constructed and shared with governors at the start of the academic year. Strategies are monitored by the senior leader responsible for Pupil Premium and allocated governor throughout the course of the academic year.

Service Child Pupil Premium

If your child is in receipt of the service child pupil premium, this funding is used primarily to support your child pastorally, if needed, in the case of or pre/post deployment. Please do share information with us regarding deployment to ensure we are able to assist our students appropriately.

Free School Meals

From September 2026, all families receiving Universal Credit will qualify for Free School Meals, regardless of income. There will however be two categories of eligibility depending on income:

  • Targeted Eligibility — Families on Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less. Pupils will:
    • Receive Free School Meals
    • Generate Pupil Premium funding for the school
  • Expanded Eligibility — Families on Universal Credit with earnings above £7,400. Pupils will:
    • Receive Free School Meals
    • Not generate Pupil Premium funding

If your child was in receipt of Free School Meals before 1st September 2026, the transitional protections, which have allowed children to keep Free School Meals entitlement even if household income increased, will have ended. Eligibility must now be checked annually at the end of each school year.

After checking, children who previously received Free School Meals but no longer qualify will become Ever6. This means they will not receive a free school meal but will continue to attract Pupil Premium funding for six further years in compulsory education.

If you qualify for Free School Meals under the new rules (for example, you receive Universal Credit), you need to apply by completing this online checking tool (NOT via the Leicestershire County Council portal) to confirm your entitlement.  We will use this information to check eligibility and review it annually.
