Governor Vacancies

Governor Vacancies

Ashby School needs you – become a School Governor and help guide our strategic direction.

Expectations of governors

As a governor, you will be expected to:

  • Attend local governing body meetings; there are 6 of these a year on Mondays between 4:30 and 6:30
  • Attend training as appropriate; as a minimum, this involves induction training when you join, and yearly safeguarding training normally arranged around the initial meeting of the year
  • Contribute to the school strategic planning; this may involve attendance at the LiFE Multi-academy Trust strategic planning day and will involve attendance at the school strategic planning afternoon held in June
  • Complete some in-school monitoring activities; this involves meeting with school leaders three times a year at a mutually convenient time
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

The role of a parent governor

As a parent governor, you’ll work with the board to make sure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in bringing a parental perspective to the governing board, but you’re not there to speak ‘on behalf’ of the parent body.

To be a parent governor you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for all children – the role is ideally for a four-year term of office
  • Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • The specific skills required to make sure the governing board delivers effective governance

The governing board is keen for candidates to have skills in the following:

  • Candidates with previous governing or board experience, including experience of leading within a governing body or similar
  • Candidates with a familiarity with business functions such as finance, procurement, and strategic planning
