All students have careers lessons each year during their PSD (Personal, Social and Development) and E2L (Empowering to Learn) sessions.
Lessons are designed to be progressive and allow development year on year. Careers lessons for each year group have the following focus;
Year 7
To raise students’ awareness of a wide range of careers and pathways available to them, regardless of their background; their individual strengths and these may link with chosen career paths; employability skills/qualities and their links to the school curriculum and to the world of work.
Year 8
To equip students with information and the knowhow to prepare them for career readiness and make informed decisions about their future. Allowing them to explore careers information and ensuring they are able to begin understanding the importance of confident communication as well as beginning to learn what LMI is, why it is important and how to access LMI and data.
Year 10
To empower students and promote positivity as they begin to think ahead to post-16, to facilitate students initial experience of the options and application process for further study and employment and to further develop and practice employability/transferable skills.
Year 11
To support students in the decision making process linked to post-16 destinations, to prepare and inform student about future options and pathways at 16 and to guide and support students through the application process.
Year 12
To help students evaluate strengths, skills and interests in relation to future roles and opportunities, to evaluate the options available in education, training, and employment post-18, including higher education, further training or apprenticeships, and gap year opportunities.
To promote awareness of assess strengths, interests, values, and skills to set realistic, aspirational goals, and to evaluate the changing patterns and trends in the labour market, locally, nationally and internationally, and benefit from potential opportunities.
Year 13
To inform students about application processes, including how to write a concise and compelling personal statement, effectively refine and tailor a CV and prepare for interviews as well as help students identify appropriate ‘next steps’ post-18, such as higher education, further training or apprenticeships, and gap year opportunities.
