Students learn about the development of film through history, study a range of international films and create their own film products.
Students learn terminology, complete creative tasks and explore a range of films in detail, in order to develop an understanding and appreciation of the genre and to be able to answer exam questions.
Students are asked to consider how audiences respond to the creative decisions made in films.
Year 10
Students are introduced to the codes and conventions of film products, as well as developing an understanding of the film industry. They will become familiar with specialised film vocabulary and be given the opportunity to analyse different kinds of film, as well as making their own films.
The production task will involve the development of an original film; creation of a digital storyboard; directing, filming and editing an original film extract and evaluating the film’s success.
Year 11
Year 11 students will use the filmic language and knowledge they have gained in Year 10 to approach the two exam topics.
Students will explore US film through history up to the present day using ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ and ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ as comparative texts, alongside ‘Whiplash’ as a US independent film.
They will also experience international non-English language films including ‘District 9’ (South Africa) and ‘The Farewell’ (China/ US) as well as ‘Skyfall’ as a contemporary British film. At the end of the assignment, students will be able to answer questions about the films’ construction and impact on the audience.
