This course enables students to develop personal visual responses and technical knowledge
using ideas stemming from a range of stimuli, through the medium of photography.
Photography involves a range of unedited and software manipulated imagery. Students
learn how to effectively take a photograph and the skills required to do so with lighting,
staging and camera techniques and how to experiment and display their work in a variety
of traditional and contemporary ways. They learn about portrait, landscape and still life
photography, documentary and photojournalism photography, photo manipulation,
fashion photography and still and moving image.
At the end of the course, work is externally assessed by the exam board. Students will
need to make sure that their coursework portfolio and exam work is well organised, selected
and presented.
The theme for the second year is launched in the summer term. Students will
need to produce a body of coursework for their A level from June of year 12 to December of
Year 13. The course (including the exam unit), is usually completed by the middle of May of Year
13.
Students can take this course to complement many other Advanced level subjects. This
could lead to higher education in fields such as photography, art and design or more general or
combined higher education courses.
